2SLGBTQIA+ Survey and Focus Group Opportunities
Did you know?
Gay, lesbian, and bisexual individuals are 1.3-1.6 times more likely to be smokers than heterosexuals. Reasons for higher smoking rates included stigma, discrimination, and oppression; social norms of this community; targeted marketing from the tobacco industry; and a lack of access and adequacy of health services for the community.
We understand that a ‘one size fits all’ smoking cessation program does not work well. By fully understanding the specific needs and difficulties faced by the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, together we can create smoking cessation programs that consider factors unique to your community.

Survey
If you smoke cigarettes or have recently quit in the last 6 months, live in NS or PEI and are 16 years of age and older, we would like to better understand your needs and challenges about reducing or quitting cigarette smoking.
Please take our community survey so we can help more individuals from the 2SLGBTQIA+ community to quit or reduce their cigarette use. You will receive a $10 gift card from select retailers (e.g., Walmart, Esso) to complete the survey, which should take 10-15 minutes.
Focus Group
If you are interested in joining a small group discussion (8-10 participants) about understanding the needs and challenges when it comes to reducing or quitting cigarette smoking within the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, please contact us via email (quitsmoking@lungnspei.ca), telephone 902-892-5957 (PEI) or toll free at 1-888-566-5864. You will receive a $30 gift card from select retailers (e.g., Walmart, Esso) for joining the discussion.
We are planning the following four ~1-hour sessions for the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities:
-
An in-person session in Charlottetown, PE on Thursday, May 25, 2023 from 7-8 PM.
-
An in-person session in Halifax, NS on Tuesday, June 6, 2023 from 7-8 PM.
-
An online session for rural participants in both provinces on Thursday, June 1, 2023 from 7-8 PM
-
An online session for transgender individuals in NS and PEI on Tuesday, June 27, 2023 from 7-8 PM.
Please let us know if you need transportation assistance (e.g., a bus pass) for an in-person session. Light refreshments (e.g., snacks, juice, water) will also be available during the in-person sessions.
