Quit Strong

The objective of this program is to reach out to low-income individuals who are struggling with multiple addictions to ensure they are supported in their quit smoking journey.  The results of this pilot program will be shared with stakeholders to advocate for a quit smoking program that provides both NRT’s and counselling to smokers in Nova Scotia.

We expect to reach a quit rate of 30% and to reduce the number of cigarettes smoked by 75% of participants.

Ultimately, we hope to have a accessible and standard quit smoking program in NS to help reduce smoking rates that is based on evidence.

How It Works:

Our tobacco cessation program provides personalized support and guidance to help individuals quit smoking using Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) and regular follow-ups.

Initial Meeting
Participants begin with a baseline survey and an assessment to determine their level of nicotine dependence. This includes the Fagerstrom test and NRT dosing evaluation to select the appropriate NRT (patch or gum). Participants are shown instructional videos on how to use their NRT and are guided on how to access it (details vary by community partner). Follow-up appointments are scheduled, and information is shared with LungNSPEI.

1-Week Follow-Up
Participants meet with a support provider to confirm their quit attempt and check for any side effects from the NRT. Additional follow-ups are scheduled based on the participant’s needs.

6-Week Follow-Up
A follow-up assessment is conducted to evaluate progress and determine if it's time to taper the NRT dose. Participants complete a 6-week survey and are reminded how many weeks of NRT remain. Continued support is offered based on their personalized NRT plan.

6-Month Follow-Up
If the participant is still available, a final follow-up survey is completed to assess long-term outcomes. This is also shared with LungNSPEI.
