First Nations
Survey and Sharing Circle Opportunities

L’nuey and Mi'kmaq Confederacy of PEI Research Ethics Board have reviewed and approved the Community Advised Smoking Cessation Project. In Nova Scotia, the project is under review by Mi'kmaw Ethics Watch and individual First Nations communities.

At this time, project-related activities (sharing circles and the online survey) are only intended for PEI Mi'kmaq Communities. This website will be updated when Nova Scotia ethical reviews are completed.

First Nations communities have smoking rates up to two times higher than many Canadian communities. Commercial tobacco use can be linked with our difficult history and the routine use of tobacco in everyday life.

We understand that each community is different and has its own challenges and concerns. We know that a ‘one size fits all’ smoking cessation program does not work well. By learning about your community’s needs, we can work together to create smoking cessation programs that work for your community. We hope that through this project, members of First Nations communities in PEI will participate in a survey or sharing circle to offer their opinion on what their communities need to help people quit smoking.

Survey

If you currently use commercial tobacco or have recently quit in the last 6 months, live in PEI and are 16 years of age or older, we would like to better understand your needs and challenges about reducing or quitting cigarette smoking.

Please take our community survey so we can help more First Nations people to quit or reduce their cigarette use. You will receive a $10 gift card from a participating retailer (e.g., Walmart, Esso) for completing the 10-15 minute survey.

Sharing Circles

If you are interested in joining others in a sharing circle to understand the needs and challenges when it comes to reducing or quitting cigarette smoking within First Nations communities, please contact us via email (quitsmoking@lungnspei.ca), telephone 902-892-5957 (PEI) or toll-free at 1-888-566-5684.

You will receive a $50 gift card from a local store or retailer for participation in a sharing circle.  Sharing circles will take place in two First Nations communities in PEI. Each circle will be co-led by a community Elder/knowledge keeper and is expected to last at least 2 hours. If anyone experiences discomfort during the sharing circle, someone will be available to talk with them.
