This past Sunday, May 31st was World No Tobacco Day. Now is the time for Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island to take the next bold step in tobacco control by adopting a Smoke-Free Generation. This would ensure that anyone born after a certain year would never be legally able to purchase tobacco or nicotine products.

For decades, governments and health organizations have worked to reduce smoking rates through education, taxation, and restrictions. A Smoke-Free Generation policy would build on that progress by helping ensure today’s youth never become the next generation addicted to nicotine.

Our provinces have long been leaders in tobacco control. From smoke-free public spaces to Age 21 (P.E.I.) and restrictions on flavoured products, Atlantic Canada has shown that bold policy saves lives. Smoking remains one of the leading causes of preventable disease and death, while youth vaping continues to threaten decades of progress. We cannot afford to normalize nicotine addiction for another generation.

World No Tobacco Day is about more than awareness. It is about action. We know prevention works. We know youth-focused policies work. And we know that every young person who never starts smoking or vaping is a future life potentially saved. Creating a Smoke-Free Generation would send a clear message: the health of our children matters more than the profits of the tobacco and nicotine industry.

It is once again the time for our provinces to become leaders in tobacco control. By adopting a Smoke-Free Generation policy, we can protect future generations from addiction, reduce the burden of chronic disease, and create a healthier future for all Nova Scotians and Islanders.

The decisions we make today will shape the health of our children and grandchildren for decades to come.
